A growing number of unexplained epilepsy cases have underlying genetic causes, and identifying these can significantly impact care. A genetic diagnosis may guide selection of anti-seizure medications, reduce the need for invasive procedures, determine eligibility for clinical trials, and provide important information for family planning and cascade testing in at-risk relatives.
At the University of Minnesota, we offer expert genetic counseling and testing for individuals with epilepsy of unknown origin. Our team ensures all testing is selected, ordered, and interpreted by trained professionals, with comprehensive pre- and post-test counseling. In line with national guidelines, we advocate for genetic evaluation in all individuals with unexplained epilepsy—regardless of age. Speak to your care provider—your epileptologist or advanced practice provider (APP)—to request a referral for genetic counseling.
