Women's Health and Epilepsy

Women with epilepsy face unique challenges across the lifespan—from puberty and menstrual cycles to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. Hormonal fluctuations can impact seizure frequency, and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) may affect fertility, contraception, bone health, and fetal development. Our Women’s Epilepsy Program is dedicated to addressing these complex, interconnected issues through expert, personalized care.

We offer specialized support for pregnancy planning, medication management during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and hormonal transitions such as puberty and menopause. In collaboration with national leaders in pharmacology, including Prof. Angela Birnbaum at the College of Pharmacy, we utilize cutting-edge approaches to monitor and optimize antiseizure medication levels during pregnancy and menopause.  Our goal is to help women with epilepsy navigate every stage of life safely and confidently.
