Epileptic encephalopathies such as Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) and Dravet Syndrome (DS) are among the most devastating forms of epilepsy, associated with high seizure burden, profound developmental challenges, and elevated risk of mortality. These lifelong conditions demand coordinated, expert care—yet many healthcare providers have limited experience managing their complexity.
At the University of Minnesota, we offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program specifically designed for individuals with LGS, DS, and related developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Our integrated team delivers expert diagnosis, therapy, and long-term support across the lifespan.
Our program includes:
- Board-certified epileptologists with deep expertise in epileptic encephalopathies
- Pediatric and adult epilepsy transition care to ensure continuity
- Genetic counseling and testing to inform diagnosis and guide therapy
- Pharmacologists specializing in complex medication regimens
- Neuropsychologists and developmental specialists for cognitive and behavioral evaluations
- Psychiatry and psychology services for mood, anxiety, and behavior management
- Advanced neuroimaging and EEG diagnostics, including high-density EEG and 3- and 7 T MRI
- Neuromodulation therapies (VNS, DBS, RNS), tailored to each patient's disease
- Access to clinical trials offering emerging therapies and first-in-human interventions
- Epilepsy nurse coordinators to guide families through complex care plans
- Therapy services including physical, occupational, and speech therapy
- Social work and palliative care for support with long-term planning and quality of life
In addition, our research team is pioneering novel neuromodulation therapies, exploring targeted stimulation strategies to improve seizure control and SUDEP rescue therapy. We actively collaborate on clinical trials of new medications and therapeutic approaches, giving our patients access to the most promising innovations in epilepsy care.
